Becoming a parent for the first time is one of the most exciting periods of our lives. Getting out on your own and starting a family is something that most young adults look forward to. However, once the reality of what raising a child entails, the stress and anxiety start to kick in. This is especially the case when you start to realize everything that your baby is going to need and how much it is going to cost. Raising a child can be quite expensive and having a plan and knowing what to expect before hand is going to reduce some of the shock.
Big Ticket Items Your Infant Will Need
These are some of the more expensive items that you should include on your baby registry if you can to help curtail some of the costs for yourself.
This is soon going to be the the most important and most active room in your house. If you are fortunate enough to have a room to dedicate to your newborn then you should be prepared for what it needs to be stocked and ready to go. Since you and your child are going to spending so much time here this is an area to give a lot of thought of what you want and need to make it as comfortable as possible for the both of you.
A crib is the most obvious piece of furniture for a nursery. A decent baby crib is going to cost you between $100 and $400. Of course there are some cheap alternatives as well as some more expensive models available, but this is a ballpark figure to expect. You will also need sheets for the mattress and perhaps a mobile to attach to the crib. There are numerous accessories that you may also be wanting to buy to keep your baby occupied and safe.
Baby monitors are also something that you will want to get for your nursery. Whether it is an audio or a video monitor, being connected to your child while in another room is going to remove some stress while also letting you try and get some sleep at night. These can range between $30 to $200 depending on the type of monitor you get and the range that you need.
A rocking or gliding chair is another good addition to have for a nursery. While not a necessity, one of these will help you rock and soothe a crying baby while you try and calm them down and get them to sleep. This is obviously a luxury, but it is worth it if you can afford it. These can be expensive and will probably set you back at least a couple of hundred dollars for a decent gliding chair.
A diaper changing table is another piece of furniture worth investing in. Having a dedicated space with all of your supplies handy will make this part of taking care of your baby less of a hassle. This is another luxury item that would be a perfect addition to your registry.
Getting Out Of The House
Safely transporting your child and getting out of the house is something that is also going to require special baby gear. Strollers and car seats are going to be vital pieces of equipment that you are also going to need.
There are many types of child seats available, but for the most bang for your buck we recommend a convertible safety seat. These will give you many years of use and can be used for infants and taller kids as well. They can adapt with your child as they grow and can be adjusted to accommodate them.
There are also “All in One” convertible seats that have booster seat capabilities which means that you will just have to buy one car seat.
While there are some expensive seats out there, there are also some decent budget options. They usually do not have as long of a life span as some of the more expensive all-in-one seats. This is also a perfect registry item as the protection and safety of your child is something that family and friends will be more than happy to help with.
Once you are out of your vehicle having a stroller will come into play. This is not only something that your kids will enjoy, but it is also something that is good for you. Walking, or even running, is an activity that is healthy and will help alleviate stress. If you just want something for the mall or short walks around the neighborhood then a regular stroller should suffice. A good one should cost between $50 and $150. More expensive models are going to better built with extra storage features.
If you like to go at a faster pace and jog with your little one, then a running stroller is something you will need. These are designed to take more punishment and give better cushion to your child when going at brisker speeds. They have bigger tires, dedicated suspensions, and handbrakes that all add to their price. These will typically run you (no pun intended) between $200 and $400.
The Little Things
While these are more expensive gear that you might need for your child, you should also consider how much the little things are going to cost you. Baby formula, diapers, and clothes are items that can quickly add to the bottom line. Being a parent is an expensive wake up call. We always recommend making use of a baby registry so that you can get help from the people close to you and you can get exactly what you need. Learning to budget is one of the skills that will best serve you so if you are lacking in this area now is the time to shape up.
The one thing to remember is that you should not get down on yourself if you cannot afford certain things for your child. The most important things that they need, guidance and love, are things that you can give for free which are always in abundance.
